Victoria and NSW are co-delivering the Hume Hydrogen Highway initiative.

The Victorian and New South Wales Governments are investing $10 million each in grant funding. An Australian-first renewable hydrogen refuelling network.

The joint grant initiative supports the design and delivery of the Hume Hydrogen Highway between Melbourne and Sydney - Australia’s busiest freight corridor.

The initiative supports

  • the development of at least 4 refuelling stations along the Hume Highway
  • approximately 25 hydrogen-powered long-haul heavy freight vehicles to adopt zero-emission technology, such as fuel cells.

This work is part of our renewable energy transition and Victoria’s long-term target of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045.

Objectives

The Hume Hydrogen Highway initiative aims to:

  • accelerate the development of a renewable hydrogen economy in NSW and Victoria
  • promote renewable hydrogen use by the heavy transport sector, leading to decarbonisation
  • build local knowledge, skills, infrastructure and supply chains that will drive large-scale market activation and widespread commercial uptake of renewable hydrogen in the heavy transport sector
  • create new jobs and capital investment in NSW and Victoria
  • demonstrate a repeatable and scalable commercial model for hydrogen refuelling.

Funding

Up to $20 million is available in grant funding.

Memorandum of understanding

The Victorian and NSW Governments have signed a separate Memorandum of Understanding with Queensland. The MOU's goal is to collaborate and share knowledge on the learnings from the Hume Hydrogen Highway.

This tripartite MOU will form the basis for collaboration on the future development of an interconnected east coast renewable hydrogen refuelling network, focusing on key freight routes linking the states.
