VicGrid is looking for an industry partner to help it deliver the transmission needed for Victoria’s new offshore wind industry.
The Gippsland project will enable the transportation of enough offshore wind energy to power 1.5 million homes (2 gigawatts) from the region’s future offshore wind farms.
The successful applicant will work with VicGrid on designing, building, financing, operating and maintaining the new onshore transmission infrastructure.
VicGrid
VicGrid is the Victorian Government body responsible for planning renewable energy zones and new transmission infrastructure. Its development and construction partner needs to share its commitments to:
- working closely with local communities, Traditional Owners and landholders
- delivering the best outcomes for local communities in Gippsland
- value for money for Victorian energy users.
The project
Industry has a crucial role to play in the energy transition and it is important that it delivers real economic benefits for regional Victoria.
VicGrid will work hard to cement opportunities from the project for local businesses and workers.
The project is expected to create an average of 600 jobs a year during the construction phase, peaking at 1,460 during 2027.
Construction is expected to begin in late 2027 and the infrastructure will begin operating in 2030.

Process
Companies who want to respond to the expression of interest should visit the tenders portal for further information and relevant documentation.
The transmission to support offshore wind is subject to an Environmental Effects Statement (EES) process. This is underway, involving a thorough investigation of potential impacts including:
- social
- agricultural
- environmental
- economic aspects.
Offshore wind
Victoria is leading the development of offshore wind in Australia.
The new industry will play a crucial role in securing our energy future and drive regional economic development. Offshore wind energy will help us achieve our legislated 95% renewable generation by 2035 target as we take the fundamental action necessary to limit climate change.
