Why upgrade to efficient appliances

Efficient electric appliances use less energy, which helps you save on bills. This is compared to gas or less efficient electric appliances. On average, households save $192 on energy bills every year with efficient appliances.

Discounts are available on a range of everyday appliances that can significantly reduce upfront costs. The discount is applied to the quote. This means that you don’t need to pay the full cost upfront or claim a rebate later.

New efficient appliances can:

  • perform better
  • include modern features
  • be more reliable and break down less
  • improve safety and provide cleaner indoor air.

They can also make your home a comfier place to live. Efficient heating and cooling can keep your home at a steadier, more comfortable temperature all year-round.

From early 2027, new requirements will start to come into place for Victorian homeowners and rental providers. These changes introduce new building electrification regulations and set minimum energy efficiency standards for rental homes. They include requirements to upgrade some appliances to efficient electric products when a current system breaks and cannot be repaired.

Efficient appliances use less energy making them better for the environment. The Victorian Energy Upgrades program will save 37 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions for Victoria between 2022 and 2027. That’s equivalent to taking more than 11 million cars off the road for a year.

How to receive a discount

All Victorian households are eligible for discounts to upgrade to more energy-efficient appliances. In most cases, you need to replace an older appliance with a more efficient, approved model. Discounts are applied upfront, so you only pay the remaining amount.

Renters can access many discounts, but some upgrades (like heating and cooling) will require landlord approval.

Choose an approved energy‑efficient appliance from the available Victorian Energy Upgrades products.

Only approved products are eligible for a discount.

Once you’ve chosen the appliance you’d like to upgrade, you can select from a list of accredited providers at the bottom of the Victorian Energy Upgrades products web page

Note that accredited providers are the only organisations that can apply the discount. They manage the installation and oversee the process. You can also choose your own installer if they are partnered with an accredited provider.

Your accredited provider will:

  • confirm the product and model is eligible
  • provide a quote including the discount
  • install the product and complete all paperwork.

If you choose your own installer, they are to:

  • confirm the product is eligible with an accredited provider
  • provide a quote including the discount
  • install the approved product and return completed forms to the accredited provider to process the discount.
