More than 100,000 Victorian drivers have now made the switch to clean and cost-effective zero emissions vehicles, with a big boost in battery electric vehicle sales in Victoria last month.
Battery electric vehicles accounted for a record 15.4% of new light vehicle sales in Victoria for the month of March 2026.
The latest boost in EV sales follows month-on-month increases in January and February of 9.2% and 13.7% of total sales, respectively. When compared to March 2025, EV uptake has risen by 86%, with 35,000 EVs added to Victorian roads over the past year.
With current fuel prices, it is estimated that Victorian EV drivers are saving $2,300 a year on fuel and maintenance costs by going electric.
The transport sector also remains one of the biggest sources of greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for 25% of Victoria’s total carbon emissions.
The more than 100,000 Victorian drivers who have already made the switch to an EV are doing their part to decarbonise our transport system and help Victoria get closer to its target of 50% of all light vehicle sales being zero emissions vehicles by 2030.
Launched today, the Victorian Government’s EV Charging Regulatory Statement sets out new steps to unlock the rollout of more EV chargers and drive the transition to EVs - saving Victorian households money and helping to decarbonise our transport system.
The new statement builds on the momentum of the Zero Emissions Vehicle (ZEV) Roadmap launched in 2021 which outlines the commitment of 50% by 2030, including key actions to remove barriers to the uptake of ZEV technology. This includes the Acceleration of Zero Emissions Vehicle Adoption (AZEVA) Program to accelerate the rollout of EV charging infrastructure across Victoria.
As part of this, the Destination Charging Across Victoria (DCAV) program has, to date, delivered 133 public EV chargers across the state – helping EV drivers get to where they need to go and reduce range anxiety.
Since 2021, the private market for EVs has taken off and Victoria is currently developing new measures to remove barriers to the rollout of EV chargers.
Last year's State of EVs report from the EV Council showed Victoria had the highest share of EVs in new vehicle sales of any Australian state.
